Current Projects

Mission Hills Heritage works diligently to preserve and improve the historic character of the neighborhood.  Our members are passionate about protecting the historic charm of the community for generations to come, but also want good development to continue to enhance our facilities and commericial districts.  Below are the current projects we are working on, whether it be from a leadership role or one of input and guidance.

Uptown Community Plan Update

The Uptown Community Plan serves as a blueprint for development in our community.  It was last updated in 1988 and is several years overdue for update.  In July 2008, the City Planning Department first announced that the update of the Uptown Community Plan would begin that fall.  However, the official kick-off meeting did not begin until January 28, 2009.  At that time, the procedures for the update were first announced, including the formation of a stakeholders’ advisory committee and a process including public meetings, workshops and charettes. (A charrette is an open and interactive meeting format where the public works with the team of City staff and consultants to develop concepts for the Update.)  After delays in hiring consultants and forming the stakeholders committee, the first meeting of the advisory committee took place in October 2009.  From that point, the process has moved forward slowly.

Mission Hills Heritage continues to represent the interests of Mission Hills, as well as Uptown in general, in the City of San Diego’s Uptown Community Plan Update process. The City posts information on this process at:

Heritage Coffee Table Book

EXCITING NEWS - we are compiling a Mission Hills coffee table book that will showcase the unique charm of our historic community.  Our friends at the Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO) and Heritage Press have agreed to publish the book.  It will tell the story of Mission Hills from the early 1900’s when our neighborhood was the dream of several San Diego visionaries to the present.  The book will include photos—both vintage and new—but it will also tell the story through text of the people who have lived and worked in Mission Hills over the years.
